Why Medical Dramas Make Health Professionals Cringe

Written By: vienk - Mar• 10•10

Everybody loves a good medical drama, right? Wrong! Though they tend to be a very popular type of television show, these aren’t necessarily popular with everyone. The layperson watches these shows and is often entertained by all of the antics and story lines that prove to be entertaining. That’s what draws people in to these shows is that they have so much to offer in the way of a storyline, but that may be where it ends. If you ask most healthcare professionals they may very well tell you that these types of shows make them absolutely cringe. There are many reasons for that, but the reality of the situation is that these shows may require a second look from a medical standpoint.

They Focus Too Much on the Characters

From the standpoint of a medical professional, the medical drama may be a bit unrealistic. They focus so much on the character and their story line that they often lose much of the medical story line. This is one reason that medical professionals don’t tend to be big fans of these shows. Additionally many in the field will tell you that they don’t have time to think about their own life or goings on when they are at work serving their patients. Therefore they feel that these shows are not only unrealistic, but that they depict things in a less than truthful manner.

The Story Lines are Way too Steamy

If you watch these shows then you may very well think that all of the doctors and nurses have taken turns dating each other. This is another reason that medical professionals everywhere tend to cringe when they watch these shows. It’s not bad enough that they spend so much time focused on the characters rather than the profession, but then the steamy love scenes and story lines tend to get in the way too. There is way too much focus on who is dating who and who else might be interested, that much of the medical content is lost. Add to that the fact that many medical professionals like to think that they lead a pretty normal and healthy life that is full of happy relationships, and this can really get to them. It’s no wonder that they aren’t big fans of this type of activity for the world to see!

The Content is Often Untrue

The single biggest reason that many medical professionals don’t happen to be fans of medical dramas is that the medical content is simply not true. Not only do the story lines not make sense in the real world, but the patient cases are quite fabricated. Beyond that, when there is a “true” medical situation happening, the manner in which it is handled and the outcome is often far removed from the real world. This makes medical professionals cringe as it gives real life people a wrong impression. This also tends to fill patient’s heads with incorrect assumptions, which can often make their job in the medical field far more complicated. This content portrayed in a less than believable way is yet another reason why the shows are not popular within the medical community.
